THE STORY OF A RIVER
I founded A River in 2019, dreaming of a place where craft and collaboration, heritage and newness could flow together as one. My name is Mahak Nyati, a textile designer born in India, now weaving threads of story across continents. My journey began not with a fixed course, but with a simple curiosity, a path that unraveled into a studio shaped by the people, places, and textures that came into my life's current.
Like a river, my path is not straight. I've let the currents of different crafts—from the dance of block printing to the intricate flow of brocade—guide me. Each technique has been a lesson in patience, in finding purpose within a place. This is a brand rooted in the timeless earth of heritage, yet inspired by the ceaseless poetry of movement, gathering stories, colors, and traditions from everywhere it touches.
At the heart of our collections are soft, hand-printed, and handwoven textiles. These are the living waters of our work, created by artisans across India using techniques passed down like ancient lore. Each piece holds the essence of the hands that made it, a thoughtful, slow, and deeply personal process. Every design is a memory preserved in fabric, like a pressed flower in a treasured book.
For years, I worked in the quiet shadows, creating for brands both near and far. But now, I've gathered those many learnings to build collections that bear my own name—pieces that feel like a homecoming and an adventure all at once. Each creation begins in the skilled, quiet hands of artisans in Jaipur, where the old world meets the present day's rhythm. My work, like the river, carries fragments of time, of touch, and of tradition.
You may not be able to capture A River in a single sentence, and that is its greatest truth. We were never meant to be summed up. We are a story still unfolding, a journey of textiles, storytelling, and soul, flowing from my home to yours.
