A RIVER - JOURNEY OF A RIVER

I founded A River in 2019 with the dream of flowing between craft and collaboration, heritage and newness. I’m Mahak Nyati, a textile designer from NIFT Gandhinagar, class of 2017—born in India and now weaving stories across continents. What began as a journey to learn and travel slowly turned into something more: a studio shaped by the people, places, and textures I encountered along the way.

Much like the river I named it after, this studio doesn’t stay in one place. I don’t follow a strict path—I move with curiosity. From block and dabu printing to batik, jamdani, tangaliya, and brocade, I’ve let the crafts guide me. Each one has taught me something about patience, place, and purpose.

Rooted in heritage and inspired by movement, A River gathers stories, colors, and traditions from everywhere it flows. At the heart of our collections are textiles—soft, hand-printed, and handwoven by artisans across India using techniques passed down over generations. Thoughtful, slow, and deeply personal, each piece holds the essence of the people behind it. Like a pressed flower in a book, every design is a memory preserved in fabric.

For years, I worked behind the scenes, creating quietly for brands across India and abroad. But now, I’ve gathered those learnings to build collections under my own name—pieces that feel like home, travel, and everything in between.

Each creation begins in the hands of artisans in a quiet corner of Jaipur. It’s where old-world techniques meet present-day rhythm, and where fabric is shaped not just by tools, but by care. Like a river, my work carries fragments of time, touch, and tradition.

You may not be able to describe A River in one sentence—and that’s okay. We’re not meant to be summed up. We’re a story still unfolding.

From my home to yours,
this is a journey of textiles, storytelling, and soul.
